CERRO
TORRE – A WINTER ATTEMPT ON THE MAESTRI-EGGER ROUTE IN PATAGONIA Produced by Christine Kopp, Christoph Frutiger and Thomas Ulrich. Deep into the Southern hemisphere’s winter, we travel to Patagonia with four Swiss mountaineers. Thomas Ulrich, much published outdoor photographer, whose work is featured in the National Geographic Magazine, and adventurer, tells us the tale of this journey. In the midst of the rough winter climate, the four accomplished mountaineers want to climb one of the most famous routes: the so called "Maestri-Egger route" on Cerro Torre. 1959, Cesare Maestri and Toni Egger did the first ascent of this beautiful ice and granite needle via the east and north faces. Egger died on the descent in an avalanche. Although many climbers attempted to do this route, they didn’t succeed and it remained undiscovered until this day. With breathtaking images, this film is a homage to friendship, happiness, the beauty of nature – and to the performances of many alpinists that tried their way up mountains but had to surrender before achieving their ultimate goal. |
