THE GREAT WATER WAR OF CENTRAL ASIA (Produced by: Kick Film Berlin and Arno Trümper Medienproduktion, A Film by Arno Trümper, HD, 1 x 52 minutes) Climate conferences can end without results, because politicians argue about limits and economic interests. Meanwhile, the first victims of climate change are emerging around the world. In Central Asia, researchers and development workers see it every day: the Aral Sea has been dying for decades. With great concern, scientists from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Germany and Switzerland are undertaking obstacle-filled expeditions to study the majestic--and declining-- Central Asian glaciers of Tein-Tschan and the Pamir mountains. These ice giants are the water reservoirs for the whole of Central Asia! If they disappear, not only the agriculture of this vast region is in peril, but a real war about food and water-supply could also ensue. |

WHITE SHARKS AND A PINK BIKINI (Produced by NZZ Film, A Film by Basil Gelpke, 1 x 52 minutes) In the 1950s, Australia's top spear fishermen were handsome Ron Taylor and his attractive wife Valerie. Scientists knew little about marine life at the time, so the couple's ability to film sharks and other marine creatures in their natural habitat soon earned them a reputation. Their stunning underwater footage of white sharks attracted the attention of Steven Spielberg, and the Taylors eventually became Hollywood's leading specialists in underwater photography. Today in their late 70s, the Taylors continue to dive the remotest corners of the blue planet. However, they find themselves appalled by the dire state of marine life and advocate for better protection of the oceans. A unique story! |
